Carla Bacon Smith
RMT
Carla Smith has been working with seniors in long-term care for over 25 years.
Trained as a Music Therapist, she graduated from Illinois State University with
a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, and was the recipient of the University’s 1983
Gerontology Award. Carla has had extensive activity experience with long term
care, dementia units, assisted living, luxury programs and leisure programming
for short term rehab patients. She is currently the Activity Director at a 190
bed skilled care and rehabilitation facility in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. A
strong believer in encouraging creativity and fine arts for seniors, Carla has
presented on various creative topics to enthusiastic audiences of Activity
Professionals throughout the Midwest and is the author of several books
including, “The Fabric of Our Lives: The Use of Textiles to Enhance Creative
Programs.”
Education Topics and Objectives
‘The Fabric of Our Lives”
1. Identify at least 5 ways in which clients may benefit from involvement in
fabric based activities.
2. Choose materials and methods for successful projects.
3. Design or adapt a fabric based project to meet clients needs and ability
levels.
“Looking Outside Traditional Sources to Develop One of a Kind Programs”
1. List ways in which clients, staff, and facility can benefit from creative and
innovation programs.
2. Identify at least ten different non-traditional sources for inspiring program
ideas.
3. Develop and implement original and creative programs that promote life long
learning.
4. Demonstrate ways to expend the creative thinking of themselves and their
staff.
“The Next Generation: Short Term Rehab”
1. Describe at least 5 characteristics of the Baby Boom generation and how they
relate to leisure participation.
2. Identify at least 10 ways in which program format can be adapted to
accommodate short-term rehab clients.
3. Demonstrate communication techniques used to motivate the short-term stay
clients to pursue involvement in leisure activities.
“Inside Out and Outside In”
1. List at least 5 benefits of gardening fro the senior population.
2. Design a basic outdoor garden plan that offers a variety of activity options.
3. Describe at least 8 different types of gardening activities to use in
programming
